Executive Summary

The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) Real-Time Connector (RTC) is a next-generation market data distribution suite designed to meet the demands of modern financial markets. RTC enables financial institutions to efficiently deliver critical market data with unparalleled precision and minimal latency, whether for lightweight data flows or enterprise-grade, high-throughput operations processing millions of updates per second.

RTC’s cloud-optimised architecture eliminates multicast dependencies, making it uniquely suited for deployment in cloud environments. With scalable threading models, RTC adapts to diverse workloads, balancing cost efficiency for smaller connections and ultra-reliable, high-volume distribution for global audiences. In Q4 2024, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) engaged Crown Jewels Consultants (CJC) to benchmark RTC’s performance on OCI, independently validating its capabilities in a cloud-native environment. You can watch the on-demand webinar here.

Objectives

This document aims to provide a detailed analysis of RTC’s performance on OCI using five distinct infrastructure specifications – Micro, Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. These configurations represent diverse use cases, from lightweight data flows to enterprise-grade, high-throughput data distribution. This report includes:

  1. Specifications: Detailed descriptions of OCI shapes, including compute, memory, and network attributes.
  2. Configurations: Tuning and configurations applied to optimise performance.
  3. Testing Methodology:
  • Throughput - Maximum sustainable update rates.
  • CPU Utilisation - Efficiency of main processing and writer threads.
  • Network Bandwidth Utilisation - Inbound and outbound traffic handling.
  • Latency - End-to-end data delivery performance.
  • Scalability - Incremental load testing to evaluate system limits.

Summary of Key Findings

  • Throughput: LSEG’s RTC, deployed on OCI, surpassed the throughput benchmarks established by LSEG.
  • Latency: Latency tests consistently achieved performance within the microsecond range, highlighting RTC’s ability to meet demanding real-time requirements.
  • Configuration: Each model under test was configured using CJC best practices. The primary distinction between the throughput and latency tests was that caching was disabled for the latency tests. This detail is crucial, as many clients typically use a “general-purpose” model and seek assurance that it performs well for both throughput and latency requirements.
  • OCI: RTC was deployed on off-the-shelf, untuned OCI infrastructure, demonstrating OCI’s exceptional baseline performance. A tuned configuration would further enhance results.
