Cloud computing holds much promise for capital markets firms and is rapidly gaining credibility as a real solution. It delivers scalability and improved service, while at the same time reducing total cost of ownership (TCO).

Not all clouds are alike

Before leaping into the cloud, firms need to ensure they avoid the costly mistakes of earlier adopters.

  • Consider the geographical location of your cloud. Does the provider have servers in the right location for your operations? This matters if you need to maintain a certain minimum latency, or you have regulatory considerations for the country in which your data resides.
  • Consider your storage requirements. How much data do you plan to store and for how long? This can seriously impact the comparative cost of your options.
  • What are your uptime requirements? Does it vary across the different sets of data you have? Can you get the Service Level Agreement (SLA) you require?
  • Beware of data gravity! Many well-known cloud services actively encourage unlimited uploads of data. But don’t be caught on the way out, when the fees can suddenly skyrocket. While publicly-available cloud services have great utility for pay-as-you-go computing, they have not been designed for the high utilization required by capital markets firms. In fact, research suggests that functions requiring anything over 70% utilization is not cost-effective on such services.
  • How much control and support do you need? Financial institutions, particularly Tier 1 firms, are used to being top of the list when demanding support from their vendors. Moving to the public cloud means that your needs can be dwarfed by giants such as Netflix or Spotify, impacting the level of support you receive when you need it.

Our recommendations

If you operate in capital markets, we recommend a hybrid approach, combining near-shore, specialist managed service providers, in-house teams and a smaller scale, offshore resource and service option.

Be sure to scope out your requirements and consider the cost not just of adding data to your cloud, but of removing it at any point in the future.

Products available on the CJC Cloud Platform

We have created a suite of products that perfectly compliment the CJC Cloud Platform, offering flexible big data analytics, a cloud-based desktop service and a time synchronizing capability for MiFID II.

Mosaic Open Analytics (mosaicOA)
Mosaic Open Analytics (mosaicOA)
Visualizing the health of your data systems

MosaicOA is a big data visualization service that enables capital markets firms to visualize and analyse any significant data set, and thereby benefit from managing both the risk and opportunity that this data can provide.

Use cases include IT operations anaytics, where mosaicOA processes real-time infrastructure data, such as CPU and memory data, and performance metrics from industry-specific components such as Solace, TREP, BPIPE, and Corvil, in order to deliver a clear view of the health and performance of real-time market data systems.

Mosaic OA features:

  • Private and secure Cloud Based Infrastructure. offering elastic hardware scaling and high performance storage – no data gravity issues
  • Access via cross connect, Equinix cloud financial exchange / VPLS (non ‘dirty’ internet)
  • Connects to multiple database sources, Solace Statspump, ITRS (Open access or nanomsg via Kafka)
  • Time series database designed for big data storage, real time queries, analysis and projections
  • Data scope vectoring provided by our proprietary ‘persistence engine’
  • Browser GUI with advanced visualizations and features beyond open source alternatives
  • Continual development of PaaS, IaaS and SaaS
  • 24 x 7 full monitoring, management and support
  • Client production usage in London, US, Canada, APAC

Private Cloud Platform

Cjc.cloud is based outside of the internet. Connectivity is via VPLS or cross connect. Every measure is taken to ensure that your data is as secure as on your own network.

Storage

Database storage represents one of the highest costs in the capital markets outside of market data and staff. Time series databases are no exception. Traditional relational databases are not fit for big data analytics. Public cloud providers come with data gravity concerns, egress charging and unknown costs. CJC have addressed these concerns.

CJC identify unrequired datasets which are going to add unrequired costs. Our proprietary persistence engine blocks these datasets.

Big Data analytics around IT system capacity can have vast capital expenditure. Our data scope vectoring technique means that expensive, high cost, cloud technology is not required and also reduces the costs of long term big data storage.

Browser-based Front End

Powerful visualizers include time series, drill down, pie/bar/column/3D charts, tree grids, tree maps, and HTML dynamic templates, all of which can be exported to PDF or csv.

Security

Cjc.cloud provides a high level of security:

  • Isolation and traffic control of systems that belong to the same VLAN via Private VLANs and dedicated intra DC networking / Cross connects / VPLS
  • Authentication, authorization, and accounting for identity verification/access granting
  • Management account enforcement through a local database or external servers
  • Virtualization aware networking and security technologies that provide context aware security to the virtualized workload

CJC offers, in addition. a range of fully featured security services, which we tailor to the customers’ requirements:

  • NG Edge Firewall Services
  • Antivirus Coverage Services (closed network so not required as standard)
  • Secure Network Architecture
  • Exception based firewall policy

Resiliency and Support

Our ITaaS Platform is a highly available service, complete with multiple datacenters in key financial locations.

CJC will provide a full 24x7 eyes on service to support of the platform. Any issues detected in the running of the cloud platform technology will be escalated immediately. CJC provide real time notifications of system health and activities.
